SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. Coast Guard stated Tuesday that it rescued 34 Haitian migrants deserted by smugglers on an uninhabited island close to Puerto Rico, the second such incident in lower than a month.
The migrants have been discovered after workers with Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural Resources reported seeing a number of campfires on Monito Island, situated within the treacherous waters that separate the U.S. territory from the Dominican Republic.
