Detailed

The Israeli army launched a missile attack on Syria on Monday. Two Syrian soldiers were killed and two were injured in a missile attack targeting the Damascus International Airport. Damascus airport had to be closed after the attack.

ABC News gave this information quoting Syria’s official news agency SANA. The attack was carried out at 2 am local time. The attack took place at around 7.30 pm Indian time. Military sources told SANA news agency that Israel fired missiles targeting Damascus International Airport and its surrounding areas. Two soldiers were killed and two others were injured in the attack.

According to an ABC News report, Israel carried out the attack to prevent arms shipments to Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iran-backed terrorist groups. According to the report, the Israeli army targeted Syrian government air bases and seaports. The strikes also damaged an airport and an arms depot south of Damascus.

Israel kept silent

Israel has not commented on the attack on Damascus International Airport, according to ABC News. The Syrian army also did not give details of the damage caused by the attack. This is Israel’s first attack on Syria in the year 2023, which was carried out on the second day of the new year.

Damascus airport was also attacked on June 10

This is the second time in less than a year that Damascus International Airport has been closed. Earlier on June 10, an Israeli airstrike on Damascus International Airport caused extensive damage to the airport’s infrastructure and runway. It was reopened only two weeks ago after repairs.

Aleppo was attacked in September

In September last year, the Israeli army attacked the international airport of Aleppo, Syria’s largest and commercial city. For this reason it remained closed for several days. Even at the end of 2021, Israel’s fighter jets fired missiles. These collided with containers at the Latakia port, causing a massive fire.

hundreds of attacks over the years

As ABC News reports, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years. However, Syria does not acknowledge these military operations. Whereas, Israel admits it has targeted targets of Iran-allied terrorist groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Lebanon has sent thousands of fighters to support Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces. Thousands of Iran-backed fighters have also joined Syria’s 11-year civil war. They have helped tilt the balance of power in Assad’s favor.
