Netherlands beat New Zealand 4-0, advance to quarter-finals

Rourkela, Jan 16 (IANS): Veteran Thierry Brinkman scored as the Netherlands registered a 4-0 win over New Zealand in their Pool C match of the FIH Odisha Hockey World Cup at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium here on Monday.

Brinkman scored two goals in the first quarter, in the second and 12th minutes of the match. Koen Bijen (19th minute) and Tazep Hodemakers (54th minute) scored the fourth goals for the Dutch, who won the title in 1973, 1990 and 1998.

The Netherlands had started their campaign for their fourth title with a 4-0 win over Malaysia. On Monday, they defeated New Zealand by the same margin, securing a place in the quarter-finals.

They have six points from two wins, while New Zealand and Malaysia, who beat Chile 3-2 on the day, have three points each from two matches. Chile have lost both their matches so far and are yet to open an account.

The Netherlands started brilliantly and Brinkman took advantage of the initial attack in the second minute to score the first goal. New Zealand could have equalized the score in the fourth minute but they failed to capitalise on their first penalty corner.

Brinkman made no mistake even in the 12th minute and made it 2-0 for the third-placed team in the world. The Netherlands secured their first penalty corner just a minute before the end of the first quarter, but could not score.

The Netherlands also dominated the second quarter. He scored his third goal in the 19th minute when Coen took advantage of a good attack. He earned his second PC in this quarter but he also failed to hit the target.

After the goalless third quarter, Tazep Hodemakers scored the fourth goal for the Netherlands in just six minutes before the final whistle rang.

New Zealand made a few attacks in the second half, but did not get a single PC, as the Netherlands emerged as easy winners.

The Netherlands have to beat Chile in their final Pool C match on Thursday to top the table with all winning records.
