CHICAGO (AP) — A jazz pianist and composer is being honored with a lifetime achievement award on the event of African-American Heritage Month.
Chicago-born Ramsey Lewis acquired the award Thursday. It was offered by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White on the Thompson Center in Chicago.
The 83-year-old Lewis shaped the Ramsey Lewis Trio early in his profession and gained a number of Grammy awards. He has recorded greater than 80 albums and written items for string ensemble and orchestra. He acquired the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award in 2007.
Some of his hits embrace “The In Crowd,” “Hang On Sloopy,” and “Sun Goddess” which featured Earth, Wind & Fire.
“I’d like to thank all of you for recognizing me and I will continue to strive and try to make you proud,” Ramsey stated.
Among others honored Thursday will probably be Illinois Lieutenant Governor, Juliana Stratton together with Candice Payne. Payne is being acknowledged for her humanitarian efforts in the course of the Arctic chilly earlier this winter when she rented lodge rooms for the homeless. CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot was the occasion’s emcee.
