Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sends bus of migrants to Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott introduced Wednesday night time that he has despatched a bus of migrants to Chicago from his state, and implied there might be extra.

Abbott has been sending buses of migrants out of Texas to Washington, D.C. and New York City – on the grounds that these cities are sanctuary cities and a degree must be made about President Joe Biden’s “inaction at the border.”

In a news launch he tweeted out Wednesday night time, Abbott wrote that Chicago has been added to an inventory of migrant drop-off cities. He stated the primary bus of migrants had been dropped off outdoors Union Station Wednesday night time.

“President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans – and Americans – at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” Abbott stated in a news launch. “To continue providing much-needed relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join fellow sanctuary cities Washington, D.C. and New York City as an additional drop-off location. Mayor (Lori) Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them.”

A spokesman for Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a press release Wednesday night time saying the town had obtained affirmation that about 60 migrants had been headed to Chicago from Texas.

“Chicago is a welcoming city and as such has collaborated across various departments and agencies to ensure we greeted them with dignity and respect. We understand that many are fleeing violent, traumatic, or otherwise unstable environments,” the assertion stated partly. “We will respond with essential services while these individuals navigate the next steps of their journey and our community partners have been working diligently to provide a safety net.”

CBS 2’s Marybel González talked to a number of the migrants because the bus arrived at Union Station. The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications was on the scene.

One man stated he was from Venezuela, and instructed González he was not given a selection about coming to Chicago.

Some of the migrants received onto a Chicago Transit Authority bus after getting off the bus that introduced them to Chicago, González reported.

Abbott’s observe of sending migrants to sanctuary cities has already drawn loads of consternation and controversy.

In New York City, the coverage has severely taxed New York City providers, as officers battle to search out housing, meals and clothes for the brand new arrivals, CBS 2 New York reported.

Meanwhile, New York City Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs Manuel Castro claimed final week {that a} bus of migrants had been despatched to New York from Texas carrying wristbands that seem like meant to maintain monitor of them.

Abbott and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been engaged in a confrontation – which reached a brand new crescendo final week  when Abbott printed an essay within the New York Post, accusing Adams of hypocrisy for asking Texas to to not ship any extra buses.

“Adams talked the talk about being a sanctuary city, welcoming illegal immigrants into the Big Apple with warm hospitality,” Abbott wrote. “Talk is cheap. When pressed into fulfilling such ill-considered policies, he wants to condemn anyone who is pressing him to walk the walk.”

“Someone get this man a dictionary,” responded an Adams spokesman. “Hypocrisy is claiming you love America and then decrying the words on the Statue of Liberty. To be clear, Mayor Adams and New York City will continue to welcome asylum seekers with open arms. These individuals and families have been through hell, and they deserve more than being used as political pawns by a governor who cares about nothing more than re-election.”
