Don’t go by size and shape of cricket but go by runs: Sunil Gavaskar.
Sarfaraz was not selected even after scoring back-to-back scores in domestic cricket.
New Delhi. Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the BCCI selectors for once again ignoring Sarfaraz Khan in the Test squad. Sarfaraz has been scoring well in domestic cricket for the past few years, but has not been able to get a Test call-up. The Mumbaikar has scored 12 centuries since 2020 including three centuries and two double centuries. He scored 2441 runs in the last three home runs, but the selectors didn’t select him from the team once.
Gavaskar criticized the selection policy, saying that if the selectors wanted someone thin, they should choose models from fashion shows. The veteran cricketer came in support of the 25-year-old Sarfaraz and said that getting a century is not easy for anyone if he does not deserve it. Sarfaraz has hit hundreds in recent times to knock on the selectors’ doors.

Gavaskar said in Sports Today, “If you’re not fit, you won’t be able to get a century. That’s why fitness in cricket is so important. I don’t mind if you want to do the yo-yo test or whatever, but the yo-yo test can’t be the only criterion. You have to make sure that someone he is fit for cricket. And if that person, whoever he is, is fit for cricket, I don’t think it matters.”
Shubman Gill angered his father and after playing a big innings, he felt ridiculed
Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan recently scored his first-class third century against Delhi in this Ranji Trophy season. He scored 125 runs off 155 balls, which included 16 fours and 4 sixes. Many fans and former cricketers were upset with the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee when Suryakumar Yadav was picked over Sarfaraz Khan in the first two Tests against Australia.
Gavaskar said that regardless of a player’s age, it is important to score runs and take wickets. Gavaskar said, “When he gets a century, he doesn’t stay off the field. He’s back on the field again. All this tells you that the man is ready to play cricket. If you are looking for younger and younger guys, you can go to a fashion show and pick a few models. Then give them the bat and the ball and then join them. You have cricketers of all shapes and sizes. Don’t go for size, go for runs and wickets.”
